FAQ category 1

Locating basics

What is private utility locating?

Private utility locating investigates underground lines that may be privately installed or controlled by the property owner and may fall outside the public utility notification process.

What is the difference between public and private utilities?

Public utilities are generally owned or operated by a utility provider and may be coordinated through the public notification process. Privately installed lines beyond a service point may not be included in standard markings and can require a private locating company.

Do I still need to contact 811?

Yes. Complete required 811 notification before digging and follow the instructions provided through the public utility notification process. A private locate complements that process by addressing property-owned infrastructure that standard markings may not identify.

What kinds of private lines may be present?

Examples can include owner-installed electric, water, irrigation, propane, communications, lighting, or other lines serving structures and features within a property.

FAQ category 2

GPR & mapping

When is GPR useful?

GPR can add another layer of subsurface information when site conditions and the project make it an appropriate method. Results can be affected by ground material, access, depth, and other site factors.

Does GPR identify every buried object?

No. GPR is one subsurface investigation method and has site-specific limitations. Our team should review the project before the service is scheduled.

What is utility mapping?

Utility mapping organizes located information into a visual reference that may support project coordination, maintenance planning, and later site conversations.

What is hydro excavation?

Hydro excavation uses pressurized water and vacuum removal to physically expose utilities at targeted locations. Mark It Private Locating coordinates this service in partnership with ACM Hydro LLC, including exposure that can support ASCE Quality Level A investigations when required.
